Bailiff 1
Job Description
Job Purpose or Objective(s): The Bailiff 1 is charged with keeping order in a courtroom and enforcing all Tribal, State and Federal laws and rules in order to provide protection for individuals and property. This role will report to the Administrative Bailiff 2.
Location: Durant
Schedule: Regular/Full-Time – 8:00am-4:30pm
Must be able to complete and pass a Physical Fitness Test and MMPI
Wage access is an option for this position.
Primary Tasks
- Ensure proceedings are conducted in a respectful and orderly manner, intervening when disruptions occur. Ensure all parties follow the judge’s instructions and courtroom protocols, including dress code and behavior.
- Monitor courtroom activities to prevent violence or disturbances and respond to emergencies or threats.
- Safely transport and supervise defendants in custody, and guide witnesses to and from the courtroom.
- Provide support to the judge by handling documents, managing exhibits, and relaying messages.
- Formally open and close court sessions by announcing the judge’s arrival and departure.
- Securely manage physical evidence and legal documents presented during trials.
- Escort jurors, ensure their privacy and safety, and prevent unauthorized contact during deliberations.
- Protect attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and the public from potential threats or aggressive behavior.
- Act quickly in medical, fire, or security emergencies, including evacuating the courtroom if necessary.
- Perform all other duties as may be assigned.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least 21 years of age
- Ability to obtain CLEET certification within one year of employment
- Able to pass a physical fitness test
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Basic computer skills to enable report writing, composition or correspondence
- Ability to use law enforcement communication, law enforcement software and equipment
- Able to qualify yearly with department firearms
- Ability to work outside normal hours and exposed to the elements
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and make logical decisions.
