Foster Care Specialist


This position will be housed in McAlester, OK and cover Pittsburg, Pontotoc, and Hughes counties. Daily travel may be required often to conduct home visits.

Job Purpose or Objective(s): The Home Study Coordinator will increase the number of tribally licensed adoption and foster resource homes through diligent risk assessment and preparation of thorough written home studies to ensure Choctaw children are living in safe, stable and nurturing families.

Primary Tasks:

  1. Complete comprehensive psycho-social home studies for prospective Choctaw resource homes.

  2. Gather background information regarding the family’s motivation, functioning and dynamics through interviewing, conducting background searches and collecting and interpreting data and collateral information.

  3. Develop and implement recruitment strategies and activities for the Adoption & Foster Care Program to increase the number of Choctaw Nation Resource Homes.

  4. Complete required paperwork and extensive written home studies in accordance with agency procedures, state, federal and tribal laws.

  5. Counsel and educate families prior to and throughout placement of children in resource homes including education on licensing process and assisting them in meeting these requirements;

  6. Evaluate the capacity of potential Choctaw resource homes to provide for a safe, stable and nurturing environment for Choctaw children.

  7. Conduct annual reassessments to re-evaluate and examine resource homes to endure on going com compliance with program policies and state, federal and tribal laws and/or licensing.

  8. Conduct retention calls and home visits on a regular basis.

  9. Report on legal and safety risks to supervisors to bring awareness to potentially serious problems which may arise in the Choctaw resource home.

  10. Participate in agency staff training programs as well as seminars/conferences in the community at large.

  11. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Required Education, Skills and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Social Service field

  • Computer proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet software, and data processing

  • Excellent communication skills, with an emphasis on written communication

  • Two years’ experience in child welfare, foster care, adult protective services, or home study contractor experience


  • Master’s Degree in Social Work or Social Science field

  • Oklahoma Home Study Preparer certificate

  • Expert knowledge with word processing, spreadsheet software, and data processing

  • Expert level communication skills, with superb written communication abilities

  • Three years’ experience in child welfare, foster care, adult protective services, or home study contractor experience
