Job Summary: Provide basic information and educate Choctaw nation WIC participants during and after pregnancy regarding the benefits of breastfeeding in order to encourage breastfeeding.

Primary Tasks:

  • To promote breastfeeding counseling to WIC participants

  • Serves as clinical expert for lactation and breastfeeding for Choctaw Nation WIC participants. Address specific concerns of expectant mothers. Correct misinformation, which may prevent a pregnant woman from breastfeeding. Every prenatal and breastfeeding participant will be contacted at least monthly, by the Peer Counselor through phone contact, mailing, visits, and etc.

  • Provide anticipatory guidance and motivational breastfeeding education materials to prenatal participants.

  • Counsel prenatal and breastfeeding participants on a one-to-one basis to help them avoid common breastfeeding problems, by phone or in person. Support women during a normal; breastfeeding experience.

  • Counsel through phone contact or texting; follow up when necessary. Mail breastfeeding education material to participants that cannot be contacted by phone.

  • Document counseling encounters in participant file (SPIRIT breastfeeding Notes). Making referral to the appropriate person if necessary.

  • Make hospital and home visits upon request of new mother, including after hours if requested by the participant. (After hour, visits shall be documented on the After Hour Contact Log and Home/Hospital Visit Documentation Form.

  • Provide support and information to breastfeeding mothers who may need help, and encourage them to continue breastfeeding while working or going to school.

  • Teach the techniques for cleaning and assembly of breast pumps, and the expression and storage of breast milk.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.

Required Education, Skills and Experience:

MINIMUM

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • To have been a breastfeeding mom, WIC participant

  • To have computer skills

  • To attend all yearly and monthly training with other WIC staff

  • To attend trainings for Breastfeeding Peer Counselors; certifying as a Certified Breastfeeding Educator

TARGET

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • To have breastfed for at least 6 months

  • To have computer skills

  • To attend all yearly and monthly training with other WIC staff

  • To attend trainings for Breastfeeding Peer Counselors; certifying as a Certified Breastfeeding Educator
